Start a Church Walking Club

Starter kit · sign-up sheet included

A walking club is one of the easiest health ministries a church can start. It costs nothing, anyone can join, and it builds friendships as much as fitness. Most people find it easier to keep walking when someone is expecting them.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

Launch it in four steps

  1. Choose two leaders. One to lead the walk and one to welcome people and keep the sign-up sheet. Two leaders means the club still meets when someone is out of town.
  2. Pick a time and a route. Same day, same time, same place every week. The church parking lot or a nearby park works well. Plan a 20–30 minute loop with a shorter option, restrooms nearby and a bad-weather backup, like a school track, a mall or the church hallways.
  3. Invite people. Use the announcement text below from the pulpit, in the bulletin and on social media. Ask your small groups to walk together.
  4. Start with an 8-week season. Follow the Couch to 150 plan together, then celebrate and start the next season.

TimeWhat happens
0:00Welcome, sign in, and meet anyone new. Share a verse for the week from the prayer walk guide.
0:05Short opening prayer and a gentle warm-up: 3–5 minutes of easy walking.
0:10Walk 20–30 minutes. Split into an easy group and a brisk group so no one feels left behind or held back.
0:40Cool down with slow walking, then water, prayer requests and a closing prayer.

Keep people coming back

  • Walk and talk. Pair a regular with each newcomer for the first few weeks.
  • Pray as you go. Make one walk a month a prayer walk around the neighborhood near your church.
  • Celebrate faithfulness, not pounds. Count the club’s total miles or walks together and celebrate milestones. Never hold weigh-ins or “biggest loser” contests.
  • Make room for everyone. Offer a shorter loop, benches along the route, and the chair and balance routine for anyone who can’t walk far.
  • Stay in touch. A group text for weather updates and encouragement keeps the club connected between walks.

Safety for leaders

  • Have new walkers read Safety First before they start.
  • Carry a phone, water and a small first-aid kit. Keep emergency contacts from the sign-up sheet with you.
  • In hot weather, walk early in the morning or in the evening, and bring extra water.
  • Wear bright colors, walk facing traffic where there is no sidewalk, and avoid walking after dark.
  • If possible, have at least one leader trained in CPR, and know where your church’s AED is kept.
