Prayer Walks: A Guide for Individuals and Groups

Walk, pray, repeat

A prayer walk is simply praying while you walk. It cares for your body and your soul at the same time, and it opens your eyes to your neighbors.

A simple prayer path for any walk

Divide your walk into four parts. Use the word WALK to remember them.

  1. W – Worship. Start by praising God for who He is. Notice creation around you: the sky, trees, birds. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Ps 19:1).
  2. A – Admit. Confess anything weighing on you. Receive His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
  3. L – Lift up others. Pray for the homes you pass, your family, your church, your city. Pray for people by name.
  4. K – Keep listening. Walk the last few minutes in quiet. Ask, “Lord, what do You want me to know or do today?”

A verse for each week

Memorize one verse a week as you walk. Say it at the start and end of each walk.

WeekVerse
1“This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Ps 118:24)
2“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Ps 139:14)
3“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:105)
4“They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength… they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isa 40:31)
5“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11:28)
6“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Phil 4:6)
7“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus.” (Heb 12:1–2)
8“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10:31)

Leading a group prayer walk

  • Pick a route around your church’s neighborhood, 20–40 minutes, with a slower option for anyone who needs it.
  • Meet and pray briefly before you start. Give each person a small card with prayer prompts.
  • Walk in pairs or threes. Pray out loud, quietly, or silently. All are fine.
  • Pray for what you see: schools, businesses, homes, first responders, a hospital.
  • Finish together with water, a short sharing time and a closing prayer.
  • Make it regular. A weekly walk, same time and place, builds friendship and habit.
